Harvard Graduate School of Education teamed up with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Program to launch Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. As part of that launch, they brought over 75 researchers, activists, teachers, and funders together to help set the agenda for the foundation's work. The objective was to get get "experts" out of their individual professional silos and bring them together to share their knowledge and make a game plan based on the collective knowledge of what works.

"Fix the Education, Not the System
Currently, lots of money is being spent on trying to fix the educational “system.” But what the reformers haven‟t yet understood is that it‟s not the “system” that we need to get right; it’s the education that the system provides. This distinction is critical, because one can change almost everything about the “system” – the schools, the leaders, the teachers, the number of hours and days of instruction, and so forth – and still not provide an education that interests our students and gets them deeply engaged in their own learning, or that teaches all of our students what they need to be successful in their 21st-century lives.

Unless we change how things are taught and what is taught, in all of our classrooms, we won‟t be able to provide an education that has our kids fighting to be in school rather than one that effectively pushes one-third to one-half of them out. And this is true for all our kids, both advantaged and disadvantaged."

When hearing the term “21st Century Learning,” many conjure images of fancy computer labs and classrooms equipped with smart boards. Others think in terms of cutting-edge software and Web 2.0 tools that allow students to create, collaborate and publish online. While these are all tools that are reshaping our culture, simply learning how to use them does not prepare students to successfully adapt to a constantly changing world. The heart of “21st Century Learning” is not about the tools, it is all about learning how to learn. Helping our students become proficient and independent life- long learners is central to their success in navigating through uncharted change.
